We believe that a damaged instrument can be
repaired but damage to a young career cannot be. So,
unlike most other institutions where you are not
supposed to operate major equipments, you will be free
to work with these when you join us.
The School has several
first rate purpose-built laboratories serving
different aspects of biotechnology. The following
account is by no means complete since addition of more
facilities is a habit with us. The labs that have been
developed are described below.
1. Computer Lab

There are twelve computers in this lab. These are all
networked and connected with broadband for fast access
to the internet. Internet is free for the students.
The students can search and supplement what is taught
in the class. Also, because of the internet, the
students can stay connected with the latest
developments in the fast developing field of
biotechnology.
The computers possess all major software necessary for
the study of biotechnology in an interactive manner.
Perhaps the biggest use of these computers is in the
enormous amount of literature on virtually every topic
of biotechnology curriculum. Several foreign
Universities have good material on their websites
covering a host of topics. This material, in most
cases, is not freely accessible. However, some of our
staff can access this and over the years have created
extensive student notes utilizing this literature.
These notes are stored on the computer in distinct
folders. All this information is available to the
students free of cost. This lab is air-conditioned for
the comfort of the student.
2. General Instrumentation
Lab

This is a small lab where all commonly used
instruments are kept. Thus, students from different
labs conducting different experiments can converge
here for the use of a common instrument and then go
back to their own labs to carry out specific steps of
their experiments. Commonly used instruments, like
spectrophotometers, colorimeters, high speed cooling
centrifuges, -20o C deep fridge, -70o C ultrafreezer,
gel-doc system, gyratory incubator shakes, incubators,
ovens, rotary shakers, transilluminators, double
distillation plants, electronic balances,
homogenizers, microwave ovens, etc. are kept in this
lab.
3. Biochemistry &
Microbiology Lab
This
is a huge lab that supports 40 students working at a
time without becoming crowded. The lab is designed in
a manner that instruments and supplies supporting the
instruments are housed on a center table while working
area of the students flank the walls. The lab has all
basic instruments needed for the study of biochemistry
and microbiology.
4. Animal Tissue Culture
Lab

The School has a highly functional animal tissue
culture laboratory with sophisticated instruments such
as a carbon di oxide incubator, -80o C ultra deep
fridge, phase contrast microscope with a computer
interface, fully computerized inverted microscope,
laminar flow etc. The lab is completely
air-conditioned.
5. Plant Tissue Culture Lab
The School has recently expanded its plant
tissue culture facilities as a result of past
successes with plant tissue culture especially with
respect to Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus). While the
staff has guided research on Shatavari, let us be
candid and say that several students have also been
responsible for the current stage of development on
that plant.
The lab has equipments for both callus culture and
suspension culture. It possesses laminar flows, fully
computerized inverted phase contrast microscope,
several high quality trinocular, binocular, and
dissection microscopes, a gyratory shaker with
incubator etc.
6. Molecular Biology Lab
This lab is mainly built for molecular
biology work and instruments for this work are kept
here. However, the lab can also be used as a
general-purpose laboratory. The lab possesses several
sophisticated instruments including a PCR and ELISA
plate reader, freeze dryer, and a water purifier that
gives water suitable for molecular biology research.
7.
Plant Research Lab
This laboratory has its own plant tissue
culture facilities separate from the plant tissue
culture laboratory mentioned above. This lab is mainly
for research purposes. It has equipments which support
molecular research.
8.
Animal & Microbial Research Lab
The School has two main research areas –
cancer and infectious diseases. This research
laboratory caters to these two areas. It has
facilities for these two areas. |
